Crane Load Testing

Load Testing is One of the Services We Provide for All New or Used Overhead Cranes

Crane load testing ensures your equipment meets safety, structural, and performance standards

At Munck Cranes, we offer professional load testing services for both new and used overhead cranes. If you're commissioning a new lifting system or re-certifying an existing one, this essential procedure verifies that your equipment is safe, structurally sound, and ready for operation.

All testing is completed in accordance with applicable safety standards, including CMAA, CSA-B67, OSHA, ASME B30, and local Ministry of Labour or regulatory guidelines. We offer a variety of preventive maintenance and inspection programs for all makes and types of lifting equipment, including Munck, GH, Demag, Kone, Richard Wilcox, Secord, Gantron, Columbus McKinnon, Shawbox, Provincial, GIS, and Stahl.

Why Load Testing Matters

Load testing is safety evaluation check that confirms your crane or hoist can handle its rated capacity under real-world conditions. It helps companies meet regulations and helps protect your people, equipment, and your facility from preventable risks. Load testing should be performed under the supervision of an engineer or competent person. Load testing should be conducted at full capacity, followed by an additional test at 125% of that capacity.

We use two types of certified test weights - solid weights and water weights - to simulate heavy load conditions, and to ensure accuracy, safety, and compliance with industry standards.

When is Load Testing Required

Several scenarios call for professional load testing. For 24/7 Service, call 800-461-4509 or fill the Service Request form below.

  • As Part of a Third-Party Certification or Insurance Audit: Some insurance providers, industry certifications, or customer-specific contracts may require documented load testing as proof of compliance, especially in high-risk or regulated industries.
  • After Equipment Relocation: Cranes that are dismantled and reinstalled in a different location must undergo load testing to ensure the reassembled system meets original capacity and safety standards, especially if environmental or operational conditions have changed.
  • Post-Incident: After a shock load or load drop event, a load test helps verify safe functionality.
  • After Periods of Extended Inactivity: If a crane or hoist was out of service for an extended period, downtime-load testing ensures components haven't degraded or seized and verifies safe functionality before resuming operation.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Critical applications such as aerospace or mining may require routine load tests as part of maintenance or policy requirements.
  • Engineered Lifts: For planned lifts above rated capacity (under engineer approval), testing ensures the equipment can manage higher stress scenarios.
  • Following Structural Modifications: to the Building or Runway: If the crane operates on a track or support structure that has undergone repairs, reinforcements, or modifications, a load test confirms that the crane and its supporting environment can still safely accommodate rated loads.
  • After Major Repairs or Modifications: If components like hoisting gears, motors, or brakes are replaced or altered, load testing validates system integrity.
  • Commissioning New Equipment: New cranes and hoists can be load tested at 100% to 125% of their rated capacity to confirm performance before going into service.

If you need to perform load testing on your overhead cranes and other lifting equipment, Munck Cranes is ready to help you.

Load Testing is a Proactive Safety Measure

The consequences of skipping load testing can be dangerous and catastrophic. An overloaded crane failure can lead to damaged property, workplace injuries, or worse. That's why every load test is thoroughly documented, and test certificates are issued for your records while neglecting proper load verification can even jeopardize insurance coverage.

That's why Munck Cranes ensures all testing is done to regulatory and engineering standards by qualified professionals.

Don't take chances with your overhead crane system. Contact Munck Cranes to schedule a certified load test and ensure your equipment operates as safely and efficiently as it should.
